Jo, sorry about the late reply, this post somehow escaped my attention.
I think you're talking about Invalid Care Allowance (ICA), right?
*N.B The following info has been heavily edited according to Jo's circumstances and question, so could easily be confusing for others..... for a full, unedited version, look for the DIRECTORY for DISABLED PEOPLE-published in assoc. with RADAR. This indespensible guide should be avaliable from your library or on order from a bookshop.
Alternatively, ring the Benefit Enquiry Line (tel no. below and ask for a copy of booklet FB 31 Caring for Someone? (available in English, Welsh + Braille) *
According to my copy of Directory for Disabled People (1999 edtn, so could be a bit out of date):
" ICA is a weekly cash allowance (£50 in 1998) which can be claimed by people of either sex aged 16-64 who spend a lot of time (min.35hrs per week) caring for a severely disabled person who is getting: *Attendance allowance (either rate), OR *Constant Attendance Allowance (not less than full rate), OR *Disability Living Allowance (must inc. Care component at middle or higher rate)"
Will other benefits be affected (i.e your Income Support + Incapacity Benefit?)?
The Directory states:
"A carer's premium is added to any entitlement you may have to your IS, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit).....if you or your partner get ICA "
Also:
"But, if you are getting any of the following benefits, your ICA will be limited to the mamount (if any), by which it exceeds such benefits: *Incapacity Benefit *Severe Disablement Allowance"
"If you are claiming IS this will be reduced by your ICA, but the carer's premiuym will still make it worth claiming ICA."
How To Claim: "Use claim form in claim pack DS 700 (ring Benefit Enquiry Line for a copy-0800 88 22 00 voice, Mon-Fri 8.30am>6.30pm, Sat 9am>1pm)" *have patience, the voice line is notoriously busy
Further Information: "The ICA rules are complex. The Carers' National Association (tel 0207 490 8818) can give specialist advice.
The Invalid Care Allowance Unit can be contacted at tel/voice 01353 856123, tel/text 01772 899489)"
You can get ICA irrespective of your gender or whether you are married, and whther ornot you are related to the disabled person or live with them or not.

Ivalidity allowance is also the benefit you get instead of incapacity if you have worked long enough, and paid enough tax.

Uh huh...thanks Fraggle, it's not easy keeping up with all these benefits is it?
I really don't know which one Jo was talking about. Sod's law says it will be the one I didn't mention (!ironic lol).
Well......I've checked the Directory for Disabled People again, and the only one mentioned (in the index under Invalid) is ICA. Nore sure why the one you're talking about isn't there. Is Invalid Allowance a new one? (i.e has been introduced/changed it's name since the 8th edition, the one I have on loan, was published? i.e 199).
If I win my DLA appeal, I think I'll get myself an up to date copy of the directory. It's an indispensable guide to pretty much everything disabled.....
-Statututory Services (i.e NHS + Social Services) -Money (benefits, concessions, management, debt, raising funds, Tax -Legislation -Info + legal services -Helpful organisations
and loads of others (18 sections in all!)
Of course.........there should be several up to date copies in all libraries, but......until I summon the energy to revolt/riot, it will stay the way it is....one old edition only. Oh well, better one than none, eh?

I got my info from my Mum so yours is probably much more reliable.
Note to Joey: Don't listen to me! I know nothing! ;D
Just wondering if invalidity care goes straight to the carer and you get your care from social services, would it actually be possible to recieve it. Also I think it would cancel out your DLA care allowance.(though read not above )
I have found what you are legally entitled to, isn't what you are nessicarily going to get.

Hi Fraggle ("come on down to Fraggle Rock!" yunno what I'm talking about, right?) Re: reply #5: no, I'm not into the kind of riot where the school gets burnt down, or monuments to the dead get defaced, more the ones where McDonalds gets smashed. Though these days, I'm not up to much more than being a spectator, boring! These riots should be more wheelchair friendly. Re: reply #4: too tired to look up the benefits stuff again right now. Spent the last four days (feels like four months) sorting out an emergency. Think it's over now (sigh of relief). Will have to take some time out to recover, unless I want to make myself and the M.E worse (hmmmm, no thanks). So give me a while to rest, and I'll get back to the boards. Meanwhile........

What i wanted to know was if you can clame ICA for your self .. im sure that i have heard some where you can ... but i think it would play with my IS and so i will leave it where it is!! I know some one who gets IS and his partner gets ICA .. basicly they just transfered some of the IS into ICA and gave it to his wife! lol .. but thank you LOTS for the information!!!! Love to you all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hmmmmmm. (thinks hard. sound of brain cells frying is heard). I don't think that you can claim ICA for yourself Jo. But, like the directory (for di. ppl.) says, the ICA rules are bloomin complex, and, though you may lose a little of your |IS (er, or IB), it could still be worth claiming.
To be sure, why not give the ICA unit, or the Carer's assoc. (er, is that the name?) a ring for advice? The numbers are a few posts back (yunno, the long post from me with all the quotes from the directory in it).
Oh, BTW, I'm 99% certain that I've won my DLA claim (YES!), isn't that great! Only 18months of blood, sweat, tears, and accusations of malingering, fraud, and lazines. Well, now I got a diagnosis (of M.E) too, so they can shove their lazy/crazy/fraud claims!
When the money comes through, I'll finally be able to afford a VCR, great!
So, no more missing fave. progs (Simpsons, Bad Girls, E/enders, Tipping the Velvet, documentaries) coz I'm too ill to stay up and watch them at the time of transmission.
Woooh!
