Staff Reporter JOHANNESBURG, 11 September 2002 Gays and lesbians in SA can jointly adopt children court rules.
JOHANNESBURG: South Africa's Constitutional Court has ruled that gays and lesbians can jointly adopt children after declaring that legislation denying them this right is unconstitutional.
Lesbian judge Anne-Marie de Vos says she is ecstatic over the ruling.
De Vos, together with her life partner, Suzanne du Toit, applied to have sections of the Child Care Act and the Guardianship Act declared unconstitutional.
The couple's lawyer Pieter Jordi says some people may oppose the ruling, but that it reflects changes within South Africa's society.
